FAQ

For Students

What is it like to work on a project? +
Every project starts with a perceived problem or opportunity. As consultants, it is our job to recognize the potential for an organization to be different. Over the course of a semester, the team's role is to see where an opportunity may exist and subsequently build a strategy to capture it. Teams brainstorm, research, and test potential solutions that they recommend or create for the partnering nonprofit. Consulting isn't for everyone, but if you're a problem solver or creative thinker, working on consulting projects can be incredibly rewarding!
Can I apply if I do not have consulting experience? +
Yes! The short answer is that your major, year and experience will not limit you during the application process. The longer answer is that we strive for diversity of majors and backgrounds. At Empowered, we treat consulting as a creative process as well as a strategic process. We recognize that everyone has something to offer, so if we can successfully bring together a range of perspectives, we can create better and more innovative solutions for our partners.
Can I apply if I am a graduate student? +
Yes! We will reach out to you after you apply to discuss the specifics regarding your potential role within Empowered.
What does the application process consist of? +
For new members, there will be an online application with a few short answer questions and one essay question. After completing this, applicants may be invited to an interview so we can further understand their interest in educational equity and our organization. For returning consultants and project managers, there will be an online application consisting of a few short answer questions. Decisions will be based on the application and previous evaluations.
How can I make my application stand out? +
Empowered is looking for students who enjoy working in teams and are passionate about making a difference in the field of education. Don't be afraid to make your application a personal statement. Show us what motivates you and why you believe your unique perspective can contribute to a challenging team project. Also, make sure to use the resources provided to you within the online application!
Can I apply to join the Executive Board? +
Absolutely! The Executive Board is what allows Empowered Consulting to function as a whole. Please let us know about your interest in joining E-Board in your application and we can further discuss it during the interview.

For Partners

What is expected from us if we decide to partner? +
We ask for a maximum time commitment of 2 hours a week from our partners. Usually, the only weeks that will actually reach that maximum are during the initial and final phases of the projects. We need active and consistent communication from our non profit partners so that our consulting teams are best suited to deliver comprehensive and innovative recommendations. After confirming a partnership, Empowered sends all partners a "Code of Conduct and Partnership Guideline" document that essentially delineates the responsibilities and structure of the partnership.
What does the project timeline look like over the semester? +
After finalizing our consulting teams, the project manager of the team (essentially the team leader) will be in contact with you to schedule the first meeting. From the first meeting, there will be approximately ten weeks until the final deliverables/recommendation will be presented. In between, around the 5 or 6 week mark, there will be a midpoint presentation to highlight the progress made by the consulting team. Throughout the process however, the consulting team will be in contact with the organization with any questions or progress updates.
What can we expect to gain from working with Empowered? +
Empowered serves our clients to address any challenges they might have. We partner with nonprofits to provide recommendations that apply innovative working methods and drive operational improvements. We hope that by delivering our recommendations, we are in turn helping the organization to better serve its student base.
What types of clients do you work with? +
We work exclusively with education focused nonprofits based in New York City. The reason is because Empowered is dedicated to social impact missions, specifically in the education sector. We aim to work with clients in the New York City area, as having a close proximity is important for in-person meetings and is crucial for the best experience for both our consultants and clients.
Can we work with Empowered more than once? +
Absolutely! We have had our clients return in the past, working with us consecutively each semester. If you feel that Empowered was able to benefit your organization and we are mutually a good fit, we would be happy to work with you again.
